Montana Credential Registry

The Montana Department of Labor and Industry maintains the Montana Credential Registry, a centralized resource that provides clear, consistent information about credentials offered across the state. The Montana Credential Registry includes certificates, apprenticeships, degrees, licenses, industry-recognized certifications, and stackable micro-credentials, along with details on the skills and competencies they represent. The registry is designed to help students, jobseekers, employers, and educators explore credential options, compare pathways, and connect education and training to career opportunities in Montana's economy.

The Student and Teacher Advancement for Results and Success (STARS) Act established with HB 252 of the 2025 legislative session requires the Department of Labor and Industry to annually, but not later than December 1, adopt in rule a list of industry-recognized credentials, combinations of credentials, and work-based learning experiences, and the credit value of each. The list was developed, with input from industry stakeholders, school districts, the OPI, and the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education and includes credentials, combinations of credentials, and work-based learning experiences that lead to enhanced employment opportunities at higher rates of compensation and, when feasible, are stackable toward further credentialing.

This is a list of credentials eligible for 3 or more credits or stackable to 3 credits. Credentials that do not meet the minimum threshold for individual credit, but that can be part of a stack of credentials have the stackability designation. While all credentials that are eligible for credit are also stackable, those with the stackability designation can be combined with other credentials to reach the minimum eligibility threshold. Individual courses within a training pathway are not all listed, but are also stackable toward the designated certificate, sprint degree, and degree programs.
